Chris / Third Coast Havanse are amazing! I did research and discovered the havanese (wanted a hypoallergenic dog due to family allergies). After some digging, I kept getting drawn to Third Coast Havanese. Chris was very patient with the puppies, provided a loving environment and I loved how the puppies got a head start with socialization and training. I joined a waitlist and enjoyed the journey of the litters before my fur baby’s. Chris has been super helpful with answering all of my questions as a future and now new puppy owner. The process of watching my puppy grow and visiting (via posts and video calls) made this so special. I really do feel like part of the family/community and I’m so glad I chose to get my fur baby Beau Barbados from Third Coast Havanese! I highly recommend them!
History of the Houston Havanese
The Havanese is from the ancient Bichon family of little white dogs, from the island of Tenerife, and claims such breeds as the Bichon Frise and Maltese as probable ancestors. During the Spanish control of the Americas, seafaring captains would trade and barter these dogs amongst themselves, and give them as gifts to the sugar barons and Aristocrats in Cuba. These dogs were kept as great family companions in their nurseries or even used in circuses for their acute agility and ability to preform tricks.
During its approximately 300 years in the lap of Cuban luxury, the breed was refined, perhaps with Poodle crosses, into today’s Houston Havanese, once called the Blanquito de la Habana or Havana Silk Dog. This name comes from their long flowing silky hair they developed over the years to guard from the bright sun on the island. The pivotal event in the breed’s history came in 1959, with the Cuban revolution. During this time 11 Havanese made it to the United States and were carefully bred to preserve this breed. There were still many other Havanese that were breed in countries behind the Iron curtain and you can find those lines in Europe to this day. Our Sire Gizmo comes from a Hungarian background.
Over the years their have been many famous people and celebrities that have become infatuated with this cute breed including, Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, and even Queen Victoria.
Colors of Havanese in Houston
There is a real reason that they call it the rainbow of Havanese. Havanese can come in many different colors from white to chocolate and many colors in between. Puppies can also start off as one color and then change colors as they grow! Gizmo, our 1st sire, was born a brown chestnut color with some black streaks. As he grew up we realized he had the sabeling or silvering gene as he lightened up to a patch work of gold and silver colors. Other puppies we’ve had have started almost black and then turned light brown. Our black puppies on the other hand have all remained black with any brown markings turning a cream color.
We stay in touch with the majority of our puppy families and love to get updated pics from them. As we get those pics we will constantly be updating our Coloring Page where you can see how our past puppies have developed over the years.
The breeder does such a great job with the puppies. We adopted a bright, well adjusted puppy who is eager to learn. So pleased with our new baby that we are already talking about adopting another from Third Coast Havanese in the near future.
Our Houston Puppy Buying Process
When purchasing a Havanese puppy from Third Coast, we strive to make the experience of puppy buying ,on our puppies and you, as easiest and enjoyable as possible. We like to have each family, if possible, come and visit the litter before picking a puppy solely based upon their coloring. With Covid and our move south we now schedule 1 on 1 video calls to show you each puppy, along with posting videos and pics everyday, so you can pick the right puppy for your home.
We feel that the right puppy will call out to you as you watch them grow and play. That is why we do not do official picks until the eHouston Havanese puppies are around 5 weeks old. This allows each puppy to show off their individual personalities, and allows them to find the best suited home.
